"’Jacko’ Lantern" And Other Creations: It’s the Wilshire Courtyard Pumpkin Contest, Part III

October 30, 2008

And one more round of pics from the annual Wilshire Courtyard pumpkin carving contest. Here are a few entries from the East building, which includes E! and other Comcast nets:

My favorite: “‘Jacko’ Lantern,” by E! Networks News Cam.

“Jack-O-Womb,” by E! True Hollywood Story. Hmm, a statement on Prop 4?

“Eddie Lives,” by Comcast/E!

“Engineers Gone Mad,” by the Engineering Dept.

“Valet Jack,” by the Wilshire Courtyard Parking Dept. Nice use of orange cones and valet tickets.

“Humpty Dumpty,” by E!

“Dr. 90210,” by Wilshire Courtyard Security

It’s an annual tradition here at Franklin Avenue: We chronicle the Wilshire Courtyard pumpkin carving contest, as the mostly media-related tenants in the complex attempt to put their spin on the traditional Jack-o-lantern.

Some early entries:

“Herman,” by Universal McCann

“Holly Would…,” by BWR/Ogilvy PR

“Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater,” by Initiative

“Vulture in a Cage,” by RBI

“Jack-Meister,” by Wenner Media

“Jack-O-Lantern in a Box,” by Fox TV

Cheers, Trader Joe’s! Jeers, Trader Joe’s!

October 27, 2008

Yay to Trader Joe’s for introducing Country Pumpkin Spice Granola. I could eat bags and bags of this stuff. Actually, I have, which is why we picked up three bags this week alone. I can do without the raisins (easily removable)… but the rest is pure, pumpkin-y, granola-y goodness. Sprinkle on yogurt, or just devour straight from the bag.

Boo to Trader Joe’s for no longer stocking frozen tamales. The TJ tamales were the perfect quick snack — and were one of Evan’s favorite foods as well. Sadly, according to a TJ’s employee, the distributor no longer has a contract with the tamale manufacturer and so… no tamales. Memo to TJ’s: Find a new tamale distributor, fast!

Happy Birthday, Coffee Bean

September 9, 2008

Discount alert: For its 45th anniversary, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is conducting discount promotions on Tuesdays throughout the next month.

First up: Today, coffee is 63 cents. (Not sure what size that is, but I’m gonna push for a large.) Next Tuesday, it’s hot tea at 63 cents (less interested). The promotion finishes up on Oct. 7 with a free espresso shot to any drink.

Meanwhile, add Coffee Bean to the list of chains (like Peet’s) that has brought back a pumpkin latte for the fall season. It’s still a little too sweet for my liking, but I do think they’ve improved the flavor over the past two years. I panned the drink in 2006.

It’s The Great Pumpkin That Looks Like Janet Jackson’s Boob, Charlie Brown

October 31, 2006

The tenants inside Wilshire Courtyard — the Miracle Mile office complex that’s home to Variety, E!, the Los Angeles Business Journal, Indie 103.1, “Family Guy” and other entertainment outfits — once again competed this year for Pumpkin carving supremacy.

And yes, the pumpkins got weird. Above, one of my favorites: “The Ghost of Super Bowl Past,” carved by EMI Music. Yeah, Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction took place a few years ago now — yet people are still talking about it. (Too bad the same can’t be said for her new CD).

Here’s something even scarier:

Yeah, you’re seeing that right. It’s “Flavor Flav,” now in pumpkin form (as designed by the Wilshire Courtyard folks themselves).

From the twisted mind of the “Family Guy” staff: “We Shor the BB Gun.”

I can appreciate what Wenner Media was trying to do here. But they lost me with the pun. This pumpkin is called “Punkin’ Pie.” But given the 3.14 carving (not to mention the carved-in “pi” sign), shouldn’t it be Punkin’ Pi? Just a question.

“Poker Face,” from the World Poker Tour folks.

The new Weinstein Co. carves out “Boosie Pumpkin.”

Then there’s E! Entertainment Television, which got so excited about the competish that they entered several:

“Vegetarian,” by E!

“Sick of Corporate America,” by E! International

“Shrek” the pumpkin, by E!

“Dia de Los Muertos” by E!

OK, here’s one more shot (a wide one) of EMI’s Janet Jackson pumpkin:

Happy Halloween!
