October 30, 2008

Leave it to Maury Povich to remind us what’s really important on election day:

HAVE YOUR VOTE COUNTED ON "MAURY" IN SPECIAL ELECTION DAY EPISODE

Hit Syndicated Talk Show Host Maury Povich Is Transformed Into A Presidential Candidate And Has An Election Day Special Of His Own; "Time To Vote! Born Man Or Woman?"

New York, NY – October 30, 2008 - Hit syndicated talk show "Maury," is holding its own election on Tuesday November 4th, allowing viewers all across the USA an opportunity to cast an important ballot.

While most broadcast and cable networks will be focused on the presidential election that day, Maury Povich will be dressed up and acting "presidential" as viewers will be offered an Election Day alternative, "Time To Vote! Born Man or Woman?" This special episode features some transgender candidates, as well as others who were born as women, strutting their stuff in front of the show's live studio audience. The audience and viewers at home will be able to vote on whether the candidates are really women or men in disguise.

Viewers at home can participate and have their vote counted by logging onto to www.MauryShow.com.

"This is probably the most important election in our country's history...not that the one with Barack Obama and John McCain doesn't count," joked host Maury Povich. "Our goal, after a very long and tough presidential campaign, is just to have a little fun with our studio audience and viewers at home."

Press Release of the Day: Maury Wants a Piece of the Hot Teen Pregnancy Action

September 15, 2008

Jamie-Lyn Spears, Sarah Palin’s daughter, “Juno,” “Secret Life of the American Teenager” — oh yeah, now everyone’s hip to teen pregnancy. But Maury Povich is here to remind you that he cornered the teen pregnancy marketplace years ago.

The release:

IT’S MADE HEADLINES ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND ‘MAURY’ IS TACKLING IT HEAD ON

“Teens Who Want To Have A Baby”

MAURY’s 11th Season Premiere: Monday, September 15

NEW YORK NY, -September 11-NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution's hit syndicated talk show, MAURY, returns for its 11th season on Monday, September 15. (see local listings.)

From Sarah Palin's daughter to Jamie Lyn Spears, MAURY explores the issue that everyone has been talking about - "Teens Who Want to Have a Baby." The show features women, as young as 13, who say they will do absolutely anything to have babies. Their parents admit that they can't control them and have turned to MAURY for help.

Host Maury Povich says, "For a long time I have been saying that paternity stories, and specifically, teens who want to have babies, are major social issues in this country that have been swept under the rug. Now, that the topic has made headlines, with family members of politicians and celebrities, people seem to be taking notice."

He continues, "One of the goals of our show has always been to get this topic out in the forefront and try to educate these young girls, as well as young people watching at home. Hopefully, it will have an impact on their decision making. Additionally, we help arrange counseling for many of our guests after they leave the show so they can continue to get sound advice from an expert that can get them on the right path."

We should have seen this coming. Maury, we’ll never doubt you again.

Press Release of the Day: The PR Firm That Wants To Tattoo Your Neck

April 15, 2008

(Pic by JetCityOrange -- not related to this promotion).

The folks at PopCulture PR are looking for a little attention. That’s why they’re looking for volunteers to ink promotional tattoos on their bodies.

Clearly it’s working, since we’re already writing about it.

According to the firm, they’re looking for dozens of volunteers to ink “Pop Culture PR Bar Codes” on body parts, to serve as “human billboards.” In exchange, they earn “a little cash.”

Apparently the firm has already found one L.A. man to take the tattoo. From the press release:

Popular in the 1990s, the Bar Code Tattoo remains a symbol of committment to anti-corporatism. My agency, Pop Culture PR, decided to flip the bill (undisclosed $ amount) to have a Los Angeles-area man tattoo a Pop Culture PR Bar Code on the side of his neck …

We’re looking for more people to take up our offer. Those interested should apply directly to darren@popculturepr.com and they should explain why they deserve to be a Human Billboard.

Is this real? We’re a few weeks out from April Fool’s Day, but who knows. If it is real, I’m not quite sure how tattooing a PR firm’s logo on your neck equals “anti-corporatism,” but hey, if he wanted “a little cash,” I guess that’s his decision.

Press Release of the Day: Your Go-To Guy Whenever an Escaped Tiger Mauls a Zoo Patron

January 15, 2008

Where one man dies, another career blooms: Bay Area tiger trainer Chris Austria discovers that the media just can’t get enough of killer tigers. From his release:

Chris Austria has found himself thrust into a national spotlight in the wake of an attack by an escaped Siberian Tiger at the San Francisco Zoo that left a young man dead and his two friends severely injured and under investigation for allegedly taunting the big cat into a hyper aggressive state.

Austria, a highly experienced former professional, now consulting, Tiger Trainer has found himself fielding and fulfilling offers for commentary from national news programs since the Christmas Day attack. In addition, Austria is also starting to receive television development and production consulting offers that will explore or draw from his 13-years of experience raising and training hawks, lions, tigers, pumas, Siegfried and Roy’s White Lion cubs, and his other work with polar and spectacled bears, and coyotes.

The release then goes on to congratulate Austria’s PR rep for finding him all of those post-tiger-attack gigs. But what will he do if another zoo-goer doesn’t get mauled by an animal soon?

Act now, and they’ll throw in the instructural booklet, “How To Explain to Your 3-Year-Old Why Mommy Has A Stripper Pole in Her Bedroom.”

PRESS RELEASE

Remember when exotic dancers were called "strippers" and even admitting you know someone who goes to "Strip Clubs" was taboo?

Now it seems exotic dance has gone mainstream. Everything from "strip aerobic" dance classes in gyms, to bachorlette parties going to strip clubs, to the growing popularity of Lil' Mynx dance poles being sold to housewives all over the United States, exotic dance might not be so exotic anymore! Exotic dance is creating mainstream buzz for many businesses.

It seems that we have a new found acceptance of stripping. First more and more women started to visit gentlemen's clubs. Now the latest trend is having "dance poles" (ie: stripper poles) in the homes. Everyone from college kids to stay-at-home moms are using strip poles as entertainment at parties, tools to get in shape or just a new way to bring intrigue into the relationship. Some people say it's too sexy, but fitness instructors, relationship experts and lots of women will tell you the at home "strip pole" isn't skanky at all, it's a great way to get in shape, have fun and reconnect with their mate.

Lil' Mynx is the company that makes these poles and recently they received tons of orders from teachers, stay at home moms etc. all over the US. Random women in Florida, Chicago, Phoenix, etc. are using these poles to get in shape, unleash their inner sex kitten or "spice up" the relationship.

Very random, but no one has dome the story yet, basically because it's so new. I think it started out with the new "Strip Aerobics" classes offered at gyms across the country. But now women are buying the portable poles and practicing at home.

Please let me know if you are interested or if you would like to interview someone from Lil' Mynx, an pole dance expert or everyday normal women who have a pole at home.

“Pole Dance Expert.” A.K.A. “Tiffany,” now on stage two.

Press Releases of the Day: Its a Mad, Mad Sanjaya World

April 11, 2007

Two emails in one day, from people with no connection to the “American Idol” star, nonetheless hoping to hitch their wagon to the puffy-headed Sanjaya:

Dear Michael -

There hasn’t been a polarizing figure in the country for quite some time now until Sanjaya Malakar made it into the finals of American Idol.

The question is whether Sanjaya has become a marketer’s dream or nightmare.

If you are looking for commentary on Sanjaya and his impact on consumer brands and American Idol, please consider speaking with marketing expert [name removed].

[Name removed] can provide insights on the challenges facing Fox and American Idol’s producers now that consumers/viewers have been mis-behaving badly by voting to keep Sanjaya on the show."

Then there’s this:

Cash Awards for Sanjaya Impression Videos

Hollywood, CA April 10, 2007 -- It's come to this.

The Crystal Awards Film Festival will award cash prizes and lots of free publicity to videos which impersonate, lampoon or even honor famed American Idol contestant Sanjaya.

Love him or hate him, there's no denying that the Indian-American crooner has created quite a stir on the popular TV talent show. The general consensus seems to be that only public sentiment kept him in the running long after the show's judges (and most critics) would have eliminated him.

To be successful, videos should be short (please!) and to the point. It's not necessary to 'impersonate' Sanjaya; an 'impression' can also be a video which successfully uses him as a reference point to say something meaningful about the American Idol phenomenon or even about pop culture.

Sigh.
