Art vs.Life: FX Greenlights Pilot That Echoes L.A. Times Writer Chrstine Daniels’ Story

August 22, 2007

Talk about a coincidence: For months, “Nip/Tuck” creator Ryan Murphy was developing a drama about a sportswriter who realizes he’s a transsexual, and decides to undergo the metamorphosis to become a woman.

Later, L.A. Times sportswriter Mike Penner revealed this spring that he was undergoing a change to become Christine Daniels (above).

Writes Variety’s Mike Fleming:

Murphy still hopes to stretch the show over several seasons. The first season would deal with the revelation of the doc’s decision; the second would revolve around him transitioning to female; the third would revolve around the surgery, and the fourth would consist of his new life as a woman and his attempt to find love.

The show has undergone a transformation itself: The show’s no longer about a sportswriter; the lead is now a gynecologist.
