SoCal to Lose 164,000 Jobs This Year; Are You Among Them?

January 20, 2009

The U.S. Conference of Mayors’ “Metro Unemployment Forecast” is forecasting a loss of 164,100 jobs in Southern California between November 2008 and November 2009 — worse than any other metropolitan region except for New York.

The Orange County Register (h/t to L.A. Biz Observed) has the details:

SoCal unemployment is expected to hit 9.8% this November, up from 8.7% in November 2008, says the report. (Note: Because Los Angeles dominates the region in population and jobs, it has a major influence on the regional unemployment number. In November, Los Angeles reported unemployment of 8.9% while Orange County’s was 6.1%) Although the SoCal rate will increase, it will still be in the single digits. At least 70 other metro areas are expected to see unemployment top 10%, including Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, which is projected to hit 11.6%.

Sucky Jobs: High-Rise Window Washer

January 6, 2009

More from Variety’s new 30th floor digs on the Miracle Mile: There’s something quite bizarre in suddenly seeing people outside the office window that high up. Not sure you could pay me enough to do that job…

Who Will Be Left to Write the Los Angeles Times’ Obit?

October 28, 2008

The cuts keep getting deeper at the Los Angeles Times, as LA Now’s Veronique de Turenne was among the 75 staffers handed a pink slip on Monday, along with film critic Carina Chocano, scribes Lynell George and Agustin Gurza, and many others.

Cuts represented 10% of the paper’s editorial side. That’s getting to be a rapidly diminishing number… but of course, the paper is rapidly diminishing in size.

A sidenote: The paper has gotten so thin now that my home’s sprinklers now regularly soak it all the way through. Not too long ago, there were enough ads and sections that at least the meat of the paper wouldn’t get wet. Not anymore.

KOST’s out with the old and in with the new (Amidon, left, and Ripa)

More than a month after KOST-FM canned morning co-host Kim Amidon, the station’s looking for her replacement. Is “the Kelly Ripa of morning drive” code for “younger and perkier”? (And does that make her “Kathie Lee Amidon”?) Dunno, but here’s the job description, as seen on Radio-Info:

On Air HOST, MORNING SHOW
KOST-FM

We’re looking for the Kelly Ripa of morning drive to join longtime host Mark Wallengren! If you are opinionated, funny and witty, topical, can relate to women 25-54, be edgy but still talk in a family-friendly environment, and know the basics of radio, we want to hear from you! This is your chance to work with one of the most popular and legendary AC stations in the country. REQUIREMENTS: Formal training in radio broadcasting and min. 1 year on-air experience. Ability to operate on-air control board, CD player, and remote broadcast equipment. Knowledge of all FCC rules and regulations. HS diploma, AA or equivalent from 2-yr College or technical school preferred.
Stella Schwartz, KOST PD, 3400 W Olive Ave Ste 550 Burbank CA 91505 FAX: 818-566-6496Submitted: 01/09 EOE Deadline: 03/15/08

Lessee, I can relate to women 25-54, and I can operate a CD player… and they already call me the “Kelly Ripa of Variety.” My tape’s in the mail!
