Retro: When The L.A. Times Actually Was The L.A. Times

December 5, 2008

From 1981: An ad for the Los Angeles Times — get a load of the size of that newspaper on the driveway, as a dog lifts it up with his teeth. Can’t remember the last time my weekday paper looked that big.

Also in this clip: An ad for In N Out Burger, plus a couple of promos for KABC/Channel 7.

Cruel, Cruel, In-N-Out Burger Internet Rumor

October 20, 2008

Here’s a delicious-sounding email making the rounds:

In-n-Out’s 60th Year Anniversary is Wednesday, October 22nd. All hamburgers will be sold for 25 cents, Cheeseburgers 30 cents, Fries 15 cents, and drinks are 10 cents!!! So mark your calendars!

Oh, you know I’m there. If it were true. Sadly, it’s not. You can still celebrate on Oct. 22 — but at full price. The fast food joint dispells the rumor on its website:

“We’ve always tried to keep our prices as low as possible in order to give our customers the greatest value. One of the ways we accomplish this is by not discounting and our anniversary is no exception.”

Style Inconsistency: $90 Milk At the In N Out

I’m a fan of design — hey, I even married a designer — and sometimes inconsistency really bugs me. Take the In N Out menu: Throughout, the prices are listed with the dollars in large type, and the cents in superscript.

Pretty consistent… until you get to the milk and coffee. The price is 90 cents — so it should be listed in superscript, right? Yet the prices are listed in the same large size reserved in the rest of the menu for dollars. If I were a literal vistor from another part of the globe, I’d wonder what kind of milk and coffee shortage forced the price to $90.

And that concludes nitpick theater. Next time: Is it “Kabob,” “Kabab” or “Kebab”? Somebody, please make up your mind.

In-N-Out Coming to NYC? You Wish, Gothamites!

July 20, 2007

A few days ago, Gawker spread the rumor (by way of Corey H, who scanned the magazine piece above) that In-N-Out Burger was going to take a stab at the New York market:

Plutocrat magazine Departures recently ran a story on burgers in which it is written “Los Angeles burger haven In-N-Out is rumored to be planning a New York debut, but burgers have already taken the city by storm.” Never has an independent introductory clause packed such a punch.

I’ll believe it when I see it. In-N-Out has deliberately kept its growth slowly paced to California and the southwest… and even though an internal battle over whether the company should expand faster was won by the expansionist crowd, New York is so far away from In-N-Out’s base of operations that it seems unlikely.

Of course, it’s amusing that New York keeps going ga-ga over West Coast transplants: Trader Joe’s, Pinkberry, etc. What was the last New York import that really set Los Angeles ablaze?
