KNBC Celebrates Its 60th

January 13, 2009

Regular Franklin Avenue readers know I’m a sucker for old local TV clips — which is why I’m kinda excited to see “NBC4′s 60th Anniversary,” an upcoming special devoted to the history of our local NBC-owned station, KNBC.

The special is set to air this Friday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. It will also air on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1, at 9 p.m.

Paul Moyer and Colleen Williams are hosting; past KNBC personalities, including Tom Brokaw, Pat Sajak, Bryant Gumbel, Nick Clooney, Furnell Chatman, Kelly Lange, Linda Alverez and Jess Marlow are interviewed. The late John Shubeck and Tom Snyder are also remembered… and a segment will look at the incident when a gun-wielding man took David Horowitz hostage live on the air in 1987.

A little bit of history:

NBC4 began broadcasting as KNBH on January 16, 1948. It was the last of five original stations built from the ground up by the National Broadcasting Company. The station debuted with three hours and forty minutes of programming, which followed a fifteen-minute test pattern-and-music session. Inauguration night launched with an eighteen-minute newsreel, “Review of 1948,” the market’s first variety program “On the Show,” and station’s first live program “The Pickard Family,” featuring Dad and Mom Pickard and their four children singing familiar American songs. By October 1949, KNBH had extended its operating schedule from five to seven days a week, with approximately twenty-six hours of television programming each week. When the station began broadcasting, there were approximately 80,000 television sets in the Los Angeles Designated Television Market Area (DMA) and Los Angeles was the fourth largest city in the country.

KNBH was later renamed KRCA, and then KNBC in 1962. That’s the year KNBC moved from its Sunset and Vine location (above) — NBC’s old “Radio City” — to its current Burbank home. Sadly, “Radio City” was torn down soon after, in 1964; a Washington Mutual bank now sits there.

North Hollywood-based prop house History for Hire is throwing a big sale this Saturday, as at least 50 below-the-line crew members and vendors look to make a few bucks in this tough economy by selling some Hollywood memorabilia.

The prop house is promising bargain prices on all sorts of things, including crew jackets, wardrobe, collectables, artwork, animation items, projectors, Aloha shirts, director’s chairs, old Sears catalogs… and even “light sabre holders.”

Event takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the History for Hire parking lot, 7149 Fair Avenue in North Hollywood.

The View from Variety’s New Digs

December 9, 2008

Looking East, toward downtown

My Variety colleague Kirstin Wilder took some great pics last week from the windows of our new Variety offices, high above the city.

Variety moved a few blocks down last week, to the skyscraper across the street from LACMA. Newly renamed the “Variety Building” (I prefer “Variety Tower”), it’s quite a change from our old Wilshire Courtyard stomping grounds.

For starters, that’s because we now occupy the 30th floor, rather than the first. As a result, the view’s amazing… when the haze doesn’t cover things up. Last week’s fog provided some great sights too. A few more of Kirstin’s shots:

Disney Star Demi Lovato to Headline Hollywood’s Santa Parade and Winterfest

October 20, 2008

Hollywood’s Santa Parade — last year’s hastily-organized event launched to fill the void when the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce dropped the 75-year-old Hollywood Christmas Parade — is coming back, and will now be a part of a day-long event dubbed “Hollywood Holiday.”

Event — sponsored by Radio Disney — was announced Monday by Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti and Councilmember Tom LaBonge. It’ll take place on Sunday, Nov. 30. From the press release:

The 2008 Hollywood Holiday will include Winterfest, an all-day street festival that will include a free Radio Disney performance by Hollywood Records recording artist and Disney Channel actress Demi Lovato… The festivities will also include a parade featuring marching bands from across the country, equestrian units, floats, and Santa Claus.

“This year’s Hollywood holiday festivities will bring family entertainment to the boulevard in a fresh, exciting format,” said Council President Garcetti.

Winterfest will run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and will be located on Hollywood Boulevard at Highland Avenue. The family event will feature games, food, and a stage where event-goers can watch performances by Radio Disney favorites, including Demi Lovato. The City of Los Angeles, Lift Up America, and the Hollywood Youth Foundation are presenting sponsors of Winterfest, which will include a special “VIP” area for more than 1,000 children who participate in Los Angeles-area programs for underprivileged youth.

At 5 p.m., the Hollywood Santa Parade will begin at the corner of Hollywood and Highland. Grandstand seats are available for $35 and discounts are available for groups of 25 or more. The City of Los Angeles has contracted with Hollywood’s Santa Parade LLC to produce this parade.

Garcetti first hinted at the lineup last night via his Facebook status.

Details on the fall and rebirth of the Hollywood parade here.

Retro Friday: Los Angeles in the 1940s

September 5, 2008

Here, a 1937 visit to Olvera Street. Check out the 3:10 point — La Golondrina, which still serves up food nearly 75 years later (but still isn’t the oldest continually operating restaurant in L.A. — that would be P.E. Cole’s).

Maria’s Thursday Three: "Runway," Loteria and the Levitt

August 7, 2008

1. Holla Atcha Boy:Project Runway” is back, and it’s been hard for me and Mike to pick a favorite just yet, but I’ve been impressed with what Terri‘s been doing so far. Meanwhile, thanks to Mike’s job, we just got a sneak peak of the first episode of “Top Design.” It’s gonna be good! Several designers who are already established in their own right, with some colorful personalities mixed in. Great casting, while Todd Oldham takes a back seat to become a mentor for the contestants (a la Tim Gunn) and India Hicks has joined as the new host. Plus, from what I can tell, future episodes feature past “Project Runway” contestants and Jeff Lewis.

2. Loteria Grill in Hollywood: We checked out the new space in Hollywood last weekend, and I love it. Going to the Farmer’s Market location always stressed me out, having to line up, wait for the food and score a place to sit. There’s something great about the wide-open space, the high ceilings, the attentive waiters, the jalapeño margaritas and the oversized Mexican folk art cards (all while Hollywood walks by) that make me want to come back to this place. The food seems to have the same price as the Farmer’s Market location, and the drinks are potent but expensive. (See photo gallery in the post below.)

3. Summer Concerts at The Levitt Pavillion: Wednesday nights you can find TKFKABT and I at the Levitt Pavillion with a picnic and some friends having fun on Children’s Night. It can get really crowded, but you can still score a decent spot if you get there before 6:30 pm. Plop down a blanket and enjoy the night. This week, the Kid grooved out to the music as acrobats performed some pretty cool stunts, as part of a circus-themed show. The concerts/events are always free at the Levitt.

Rate-A-Restaurant #182: Loteria Grill Hollywood

August 7, 2008

Restaurant: Loteria Grill

Location: 6627 Hollywood Blvd. (Hollywood)

Type of restaurant: Mexican

We stipulated: We were heading west to the LACMA — giving us a rare chance to hit Hollywood for lunch. We’ve been big fans of Loteria’s Farmers Market location for years — here’s our 2004 review — but that setting always seemed too frantic and not right for such gourmet Mexican fare. Enter the Hollywood location — not only is the food served in a more pleasant environment, but they mix margaritas there. Sold.

What we ordered: MIKE: Papa con rajas taco (potatoes with roasted poblano peppers, served with finely chopped onion and cilantro, queso fresco and salsa verde, $3); tinga de pollo taco (chicken, stewed with chipotle peppers and homemade chorizo. Served with salsa roja de chipotle, $3.50); cochinita pibil taco (pork, slowly roasted in banana lead, served with citrus-pickled red onion and chile habanero, $3.50); jalapeno margarita ($12). MARIA: Mole poblano con pollo burrito (chicken in mole poblano, served with sesame seeds, chopped onion and queso fresco, $8.50).

High point: The space is cool, comforting and less hectic (obviously) than the Farmer’s Market. And that jalapeno margarita was a nice surprise, tangy and just spicy enough. Also loved the habanero salsa that came with the free chips.

Low point: Flies. Lots of them. Landing on our faces. Distracting us from our food.

Overall impression: A great place for a Hollywood lunch — and not too pricey (other than the margarita, which, I know, I shouldn’t be having on a Saturday afternoon anyway. But hey, it’s summertime). And yes, I know meals like this are partly why I need to lose ten pounds, per my doctor. But food this good is hard to resist.

Chance we’ll go back: Absolutely. And will bring others as well.

Retro Friday: Hollywood Village People

June 20, 2008

Back one summer when my family was living in the Philippines, one of the Manila TV stations would play music videos every morning before signing on. Thing is, they were the same videos every single day. If I remember, the videos included “Suddenly,” from Olivia Newton-John and Cliff Richards, and “In the Navy” from the Village People. I still remember my sister and I marching around the house to this video when we were kids… hey, at the time, we really did assume it was just a song about the joys of the Navy.

I bring up the Village People because they’re among this year’s Hollywood Walk of Fame recipients. Also receiving stars: Ben Kingsley, Hugh Jackman, Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Cameron Diaz, Robert owney Jr., Tim Burton, Leslie Caron, Charles Durning, Ralph Fiennes, William Petersen, Kyra Sedgwick, John Stamos, Mark Burnett, Chuck Lorre, Kenny “Baby Face” Edmonds, Dave Koz, The Miracles, Doug Morris, Rush, Shakira, Tinkerbell (!), KFI’s Bill Handel and Harry Shearer, who’s receiving his star for his KCRW show, not “The Simpsons” or “Spinal Tap.” also provides voices for characters on “The Simpsons.”
