Here’s a classic… and by classic, I mean “another cheesy 80s movie telecast over and over again on cable back in the day.” Remember the Halloween-themed TV movie “The Worst Witch”? (Charlotte Rae — yes, Mrs. Garrett — and Fairuza Balk were among the stars.) Here, Tim Curry croons “Anything Can Happen on Halloween,” including the fantastic line, “Has anybody seen my tamborine?”

Vincent Price Would Be Proud: Angelenos Pull Off a "Thriller"
October 29, 2008They pulled it off — the L.A. chapter of “Thrill the World” performed the Thriller dance on Saturday in front of crowds at Hollywood and Highland. And as you can see above, they did a pretty good job.
The LA Weekly was there, and files an extensive report. A highlight:
This Los Angeles chapter of “Thrill the World ’08″ — across the globe, dances in 91 cities in 12 countries took place the same day — was up and at ‘em at an hour that ought to make the dead crawl back into their tombs and whimper. In an attempt to hold the world record for the most people to do the “Thriller” dance at one time, dozens of aspiring zombie strutters gathered in the bowels of the shopping complex’s garage — level 6E to be exact — with coffee and donuts, makeup and hairspray, costumes and boomboxes to pump up, dress up, and get in last minute practice.
Just before 11 a.m., they began the lurch up to the bright plaza and took their places to the initial bewilderment, and giddy delight of wandering shoppers and tourists.

Scenes from a Halloween Festival-Dominated Weekend
October 28, 2008
This is what happens when you have a 3-year-old around Halloween time. You start attending Halloween carnivals and festivals. Three, to be exact, this weekend. On Friday night, it was trick-or-treating around Atwater Village’s Glendale Blvd., where merchants passed out candy and costumed kids crowded the sidewalks. On Saturday, we headed to Pasadena, where the Kidspace Museum held its annual Halloween Festival — more crowded than I expected. Then on Sunday, we managed to secure tix to the Halloween festival, sponsored by Variety and others, that served as a fundraiser for Camp Ronald McDonald.
Some pics from our weekend (sorry, no pics here of Blogger Preschooler in his fireman costume):

"Thrill the World" Comes to Hollywood and Highland
October 21, 2008
Caught this first on CreepyLA, Los Angeles’ Halloween blog: If you’re looking for a different way to celebrate the holiday, you might want to consider joining in on L.A.’s mass “Thriller” group dance.
The event is part of Thrill the World, a global effort to get as many people dancing the “Thriller” as possible.
Here in L.A., the group will be performing the dance sometime after 10:30 but no later than 11 on Saturday, Oct. 25. Wanna join in? You can’t just show up: They’re holding several rehearsals in the coming days, so that you can learn your part. Here are the upcoming rehearsals:
Tues Oct 21st: UCLA
@ Campus. Wilson Plaza or nearby. 3:30pm-6:30pm
center of campus UCLA, Westwood CAWed Oct 22nd: Santa Monica
@Virginia Avenue Park. Time: TBD
2200 Virginia Ave, Santa Monica, CAFri Oct 24th: Hollywood *FINAL PRACTICE!
@ Pan Pacific Regional Park. 5pm-7pm (we may stay later)
7600 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA
It doesn’t take long to learn the dance, they say, and the event is, of course, free. More details here.
Pumpkins for Peace
October 20, 2008
Our friend Jenni invited us on Saturday to help celebrate “Pumpkins for Peace,” an event thrown by the Center for Nonviolent Education and Parenting.
While at the event, we carved our first jack o’lantern in years (above). We went the traditional route, but we’re proud of it nonetheless.

The CNEP advocates “the acceptance and practice of the principles of nonviolent child raising.”
Besides pumpkin carving, the well-attended event featured photos, a peace walk, face painting, cupcake decorating, snacks and drinks. The event also gave us a chance to spend some time in Echo Park, where it was held.

Halloween with Franklin Avenue
November 1, 2007
Anyone else get thrown off by the later start to trick-or-treating this year? Normally, it’s dark by 5 p.m. on Halloween, and the kids are immediately out. But this year, with Daylight Savings Time pushed back, it was still a tad light at 6. I know that’s supposed to be a good thing — and people always recommend that kids go trick-or-treating while it’s stil light out — but nonetheless, no one was out until at least after 6 in our neighborhood.
We finally hit the streets around 6:30, with BT decked out in his cowboy-riding-a-pony costume. At least one couple handing out candy told us Evan “won the prize” for cutest costume of the night. (Of course, when a tired Evan wanted to be carried home, it wasn’t the easiest costume to hold him in.)
Blogger Toddler was less pleased with some of the elaborately decorated homes — a bit too scary for a 2 1/2-year-old. Above, by far our Adams Hill neighborhood’s best in show. This house — coincidentally, owned by an old work colleague of Maria’s — outdoes itself every year for Halloween, and this year was the most elaborate yet. The iron fence and foam pedastals were brought in for the occasion; add some smoke, those cobwebs, flashing lights and more, and it was indeed a scary sight to see last night. (Blogger Toddler was none too pleased.)
After a round of trick-or-treating, Evan actually got a bigger kick out of handing out candy. We sat on the porch, which oddly seemed to intimidate a lot of people, who passed us right by. It did serve as a bit of a deterrant to the usual round of big kids looking to score candy — they’re apparently more embarrassed to come up to the house when we’re sitting right there.
And how was your Halloween?
