Los Angeles: Ad Town One in a series

January 14, 2009

Spotted during Tuesday night’s “American Idol” premiere (yes, I watched, and don’t deny it, you did too): A Coke machine, smack dab in Union Station.

Los Angeles: Ad Town One in a series

Downtown Los Angeles frequently doubles for New York in film and TV — but I don’t quite understand why this commercial (for the Chevy Traverse) felt the need to masquerade as another city.  In this case, a 30 second spot can only convey so much — so what difference does it make whether this woman is driving down a street in L.A., New York or elsewhere? Why go through the trouble to make fake street signs, when L.A.’s signs would have sufficed?

Above, the ad starts with shoes falling from the sky. Look at that street sign — 35th St. Not only is that not a Los Angeles sign — it was clearly added there by the commerical directors – but there is no 35th St. close to downtown.

They appear to be driving down Spring — anyone know for sure?
Meanwhile, in case you still wonder whether this was really shot in L.A., check out below: A Downtown News box.

There’s also a newspaper machine for Tribune’s Metromix guide.

Los Angeles Ad Town: Figaro Bistrot

September 11, 2008

Los Feliz’s own Figaro Bistrot — also known as Figaro Cafe, also known as Figaro Brasserie — makes a guest appearance in a new commercial for sloppy burger chain Carl’s Jr. View the ad here. (It’s for their artery cloggin “Monster Breakfast Sandwich.” Holy moly, that thing must be 10,000 calories!)

In comparison, here’s how the Figaro normally looks, via its website:

Here’s one perk to living at the Milano Lofts that even the downtown building doesn’t mention: Apparently it’s giant-cupcake-adjacent. At least, according to this latest Visa commercial.

This current spot for Weight Watchers was shot both outside (above) and inside (below) Los Feliz’s Farfalla, on Hillhurst.

Los Angeles As Brazil: L.A. Ad Town

May 13, 2008

Thanks to Franklin Avenue reader Stuart, who notes that this commercial — for the Dodge Journey — supposedly follows the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team as they drive to Brazil for a rematch.

But that’s no Brazilian stadium in the final shot — that’s the Home Depot Center in Carson!

In this spot for Farmers Insurance, a man on a tricycle drives out of his office parking garage and on to the streets of downtown, then a freeway onramp, and finally, up this hill… close to downtown (not sure why he needed te freeway as part of his commute, but I guess it served for comedic purposes).

The point? It blows to be in a car accident (um, something I’ve learned quite well this week), but this certain insurance company will help you out.

Los Angeles Ad Town: The Downtown Slip ‘N Slide

April 15, 2008

Last month, both LAist and Blogging.la printed photo essays of a giant Slip ‘N Slide on the streets of Downtown. It was a commercial shoot… but there wasn’t much info beyond that.

Last night, I caught the nationally telecast ad (which ran during “Dancing with the Stars”). It was a spot for Dodge. Here are some screen grabs:

An SUV speeds past Olive…
… and parks in the middle of the street. The passengers race out, open the trunk…
… and pull out “World’s Longest Water Slide” — which promises that it’s “really, really long!” (It’s, of course, a fictional item — but this real one is pretty close.) That website on the box, by the way, touts www.worldslongestwaterslide.com — which leads to this under construction website.

Rolling out the slide…

… and down they go.

Gratuitous SUV shot. It’s still a car commercial, after all.

Yeah, yeah, whatever. Where do I get one of those Slip ‘N Slides?!
